MEMBERS PRESENT: Laurie Loughlin, Debbie Meredith, Kort Nygard, Ronnie Steinberg
GUEST: Carol Mace – State Government Liaison
TEF requested the State Government Liaison’s presence at this meeting because discussion topics included the State of Tennessee.
Kort convened the meeting at 7:20 p.m.
Ronnie revealed her layout plans for the newsletter, and the group suggested potential topics for the first issue. Ronnie will soon be contacting the TEAC members who have expressed interest in this project.
Kort has been asked to participate in this month’s Pioneer Network conference call, which will center on the dynamics of collaboration when long-term care culture change organizations have successfully partnered with each other to present events.
Carol reminded the members of the need to expand the Board of Directors, and potential candidates and a timetable were discussed.
Debbie declared that Bordeaux Long Term Care’s participation in the Disney free admission for 1-day of service to a nonprofit program has resulted in an overwhelming response. About 70% have actually been good volunteers. Their Tuesday Grille continues to be greatly enjoyed by the residents. Once a month they go international, the most recent “travel” experience being to The Philippines, with recipes prepared by employees who are actually from there.
Laurie presented some additional information about a contender for our annual non-Eden educational program, per our grant from the State of Tennessee. The members weighed the pros and cons of this and other options, and, while a decision needs to be made soon to secure a booking by the end of this fiscal year (6/30/10), it was decided that a few additional pieces of information are necessary first.
Kort adjourned the meeting at 9:50 p.m.

Kort convened the meeting at 7:15 p.m.
Debbie presented a draft proposal for usage of federal CMP (Civil Monetary Penalty) funds and asked for comments from the other members which she will incorporate into a revision.
The group chose the entity for our non-Eden educational event this year. Laurie will finalize the details with the speaker, and after date and place have been decided, she will issue the invitation to the membership.
During her spring break from Vanderbilt, Ronnie is going to work on the layout for our newsletter and contact the members who want to contribute to it.
Carol announced that, in addition to the CEAT (Certified Eden Associate Training) scheduled in Knoxville in April (see Item #2 in the “Mark Your Calendar” section below for details), there will be a CEAT in Jackson toward the end of that month. As soon as that schedule is set, the new Eden Alternative Education Coordinator, Meredith Burrus, who is a TEAC member from Rutherford County, will issue a flyer.
Kort attended the recent Eden Alternative Educators and Mentors Conference in Tampa. He will be collaborating with Dr. Al Power to determine how the Eden Alternative changes the behavior of health professionals. He will also participate in refining the tool for measuring wellbeing. In other news from the conference, Haleigh’s Almanac Eden Associate Training Manual has been revised to be more user-friendly and can be purchased from the Home Office website at www.edenalt.org. Also, a list is being developed of people who have special presentation skills who would be willing to contribute to the Eden education process in the following areas: problem solving groups, dementia, managing depression without drugs, and employee team building. If you would like to be included, please contact Meredith Burrus at education@edenalt.org.
Ronnie is working on the final portion of her research study for us and asked Carol for data from the most recent grantee surveys, which Carol will forward to her.
Laurie has been invited to speak about the Eden Alternative at an APS (Adult Protective Services) training seminar in south central Tennessee in April.
Carol passed out budget worksheets, and the rest of the meeting was spent completing a preliminary budget for 2010/2011.
Kort adjourned the meeting at 10:25 p.m.

MEMBERS PRESENT: Laurie Loughlin, Kort Nygard, Ronnie Steinberg
Kort convened the meeting at 8:30 a.m. in Dandridge and temporarily adjourned it at 10:30 a.m. Kort reconvened the meeting at 1:00 p.m. in Crossville and adjourned it at 2:15 p.m.
For the first time, the TEF Board of Directors Meeting was conducted on the road during blocks of free time when 3 of the Directors traveled to East Tennessee to attend 2 landmark events.
On 05/06/10, Jefferson County Nursing Home in Dandridge held an open house for the first Green House campus in Tennessee. The cottages are stunning. Lots of people were on hand for this historic occasion, including state lawmakers. The Directors kept running into other TEAC members. Dr. Bill Thomas flew down from New York, and, after addressing the crowd, held a meeting for the facility’s shabazim, impressing upon them their leadership role in our state’s culture change movement.
On 05/07/10, Wharton Nursing Home in Pleasant Hill had the dedication for its small household model buildings, which greatly resemble Green Houses but house more residents. This, too, was a crowded gathering of residents, staff and visitors, all of whom were greatly delighted by their surroundings and joyously anticipating beginning life in them.
TEF congratulates both of these forward-thinking organizations for being the vanguard of long-term care culture change in Tennessee.
Laurie took several photos at both places which she will ask our webmaster to post on our website in the near future. She will notify the membership when they are up.
Ronnie informed the others that she has finished 2 of the 5 chapters of the research report she is doing for TEF and that the document will be completed in 6 weeks.
Debbie Meredith, a Director who was unable to make the trip due to her responsibilities in preparing for Nursing Home Week at Bordeaux Long-term Care, had asked the other members for approval to add funding for a reunion/refresher meeting for CEAs (Certified Eden Associates) to our proposal for uses of federal CMP (Civil Monetary Penalty) funds. The Board voted in favor of this addition, and Kort is already formulating an agenda he thinks will be very effective in the hopeful event that we receive the money.
Laurie advised that she has sent out the invitation and registration form for the Xtreme Aging Seminar, this fiscal year’s non-Eden educational event, and that several members have registered but there are still some of the 30 slots available. She will reissue the invitation.
Carol Mace, TEF’s State Government Liaison, has advised the members that 22 facilities have applied for TEAC’s 2010/2011 Eden grants. The Grant Review Committee will meet Thursday, 05/20/10 and Friday, 05/21/10, to read the proposals and decide which 10 will receive the $5,000 grants.

MEMBERS PRESENT: Laurie Loughlin, Kort Nygard
GUEST – Carol Mace – State Government Liaison
TEF requested the State Government Liaison’s presence at this meeting because discussion topics included the State of Tennessee.
Kort convened the meeting at 7:10 p.m.
Carol presented Kort with the TEAC grant reimbursement claim, which he signed.
Laurie brought up the topic of competency hearings because a friend of hers is battling to protect her mother, who has been pushed into this process by a sibling. Kort, who recently testified in an ongoing case in Chattanooga, stated emphatically that Tennessee needs standards that define competency based on ability, not age.
Christopher Perna has been named the new Eden Alternative CEO (Chief Executive Officer). Mr. Perna has many years of experience in the long-term care insurance industry and was introduced at the 5th Eden Alternative International Conference in Colorado in June.
Also at that conference, TEAC member Jane Heald, an elder at Uplands Retirement Village in Pleasant Hill, was presented with an International Eden Elder Award, which recognizes the contributions of an elder living in an Eden Registered Home or supporting an Eden Registered Home’s journey. Those of us who know her know how much she deserves this accolade. Congratulations, Jane, and thank you from the TEF Board of Directors.
Kort, who attended the conference, told the group that the “Path to Mastery”, which has been worked on for a long time, was unveiled. It marks how far along the Eden journey a home has come; a companion well-being survey shows what effect this progress has had on the residents, their families and staff. It will help each home to see where it is on its Eden journey and will help the Home Office to better aid the efforts in Edenizing homes.
Kort, along with TEAC members Joe and Melanie Adair, gave 2 presentations at the conference. “Gold E. Locks & the 3 Plagues” had them getting into bear characters to explore loneliness, helplessness and boredom. “Ageism in Long-term Care” shows how cultural views on aging effect the care provided to elders, and Dr. Bill Thomas joined them in presenting. Dr. Thomas mentioned to Kort that, at the opening of the Green Houses at Jefferson County Nursing Home in Dandridge in May, he was heartened to see how well the shabazim were being trained and grasping the Eden concept.
Carol announced that at the upcoming AHFSA Annual Meeting (see Item # 6 in the “Mark Your Calendar” section below for details) there will be a silent auction with proceeds going to help Nashville flood victims. The Board agreed to donate a TEAC mug and T-shirt to it. The program for the conference is now on the AHFSA website.
In keeping with TEF/TEAC’s emphasis on community outreach, Kort will be going to Evansville, Indiana, to give a speech about long-term care culture change.
Laurie declared that TEAC needs to do something to boost attendance at our Membership Meetings and Videoconferences. Kort suggested that every session contain an educational segment. Everyone agreed, topics were discussed, and it was decided that Kort will give the following presentations for the remainder of this calendar year:
08/05/10 – TEAC Membership Meeting – “Identifying Different Types of Dementia” (with special emphasis on Lewy Body Dementia)
10/07/10 – TEAC Videoconference – “Reducing Injury and Combativeness in Residents with Dementia”
12/02/10 – TEAC Membership Meeting – “Reducing Staff Turnover”.
The Board hopes that other TEAC members will volunteer to present sessions on topics of interest to them at our meetings in 2011.
Carol advised the members that there are strong culture change coalitions in Arkansas, Georgia, and South Carolina, and she thinks we should seriously consider doing joint events and/or trainings with these states that are contiguous to Tennessee.
Kort adjourned the meeting at 9:45 p.m.
